1. Background
Developing educational materials is no longer the work of a single author. Teachers, curriculum specialists, researchers, instructional designers, publishers, school leaders and technology experts increasingly collaborate, and teachers are expected not only to use textbooks critically but also to adapt, supplement and design materials in an era where artificial intelligence (AI) and digital platforms are changing how materials are produced, evaluated and used, and raise new questions about quality. In Morocco, textbook writing and materials development have evolved considerably under successive reforms aimed at improving quality, equity, competency-based learning and multilingual education (The Strategic Vision 2015-2030, the national framework law 51-17, current reform roadmap 22-2026, Morocco Bridge to Middle School Programme). In English Language Teaching (ELT), textbooks have moved from structural approaches towards communicative, task-based and learner-centred models that seek to integrate critical thinking, project-based learning, intercultural awareness and life skills. However, important questions remain: How well do textbooks reflect learners’ contexts and cultures? How effectively are they aligned with curricula and assessment? How do teachers and learners actually use them? And do they prepare learners for future academic, professional and digital demands?
This conference brings together researchers, teachers, teacher educators, inspectors, curriculum designers, publishers, policymakers and doctoral researchers, from primary to higher education and across ELT, ESP, EAP and STEM, to examine textbook design, materials development, adaptation and evaluation from theoretical, empirical and practical perspectives. It also invites critical reflection on the opportunities and risks of AI, including academic integrity, bias, teacher agency and the balance between print and digital resources. By placing Moroccan experience alongside international research, the conference aims to generate evidence-based insights that support inclusive, high-quality and innovative learning materials.
2. Conference aims
The conference aims to:
• examine recent developments in textbook and materials evaluation, design and adaptation in the age of AI and digital technologies;
• promote dialogue between researchers, teachers, publishers and policymakers;
• discuss inclusivity, culture and representation in educational materials;
• share practical tools and frameworks for evaluating, adapting and designing learning materials; and
• highlight Moroccan and international experiences while encouraging research collaboration and professional networking.
3. Expected outcomes
• Conference proceedings.
• An open-access evaluation toolkit (checklist and rubric) for teachers, developed from the workshops and the closing plenary.
• Practical recommendations for educators, publishers and policymakers.
• A network of researchers and practitioners in materials development and evaluation.
